Jason McCarthy, North District Representative on BPS School Board

MCCARTHY RE-ELECTED TO SCHOOL BOARD

Jason McCarthy has retained his seat representing the North District on the Buffalo Public School Board of Education.  Despite an expensive, negative campaign against McCarthy, he was victorious in a three-way race.  McCarthy is a life-long North Buffalo resident and graduate of UB.  He has been a community activist and established the first dog park in Buffalo.  He is currently working on a skate park along the waterfront in LaSalle Park.  He lives in North Buffalo with his wife and two children.

CPHA New Sign

CPHA Welcome Sign

The CPHA recently installed a welcome sign at the intersection of Depew and Linden.   Delaware District Councilmember Michael LoCurto provided partial funding for the project with the balance coming from CPHA member dues.  The sign sits on the lawn of Parkside Lutheran Church which also allows the CPHA access to its watering system.

The all-volunteer association also maintains the fountain, surrounding garden, and Hosta garden at Burke’s Green between Beard and Wesley.  The CPHA relies on annual dues to fund its work which also includes maintaining another garden on Duane Terrace and providing security services on Halloween and Christmas.  Volunteers also work with Re-Tree Western New York to plant new trees in the neighborhood.

Sophia, a Bernese Mountain Dog, helps students relieve stress

Parkside resident, Pamela Rose is part of a group called Therapy Animals of Western New York (TAWNY) whose mission is to educate people about the value of using animals in therapeutic settings.  The non-profit also connects dog owners with the resources they need to train and certify their animals as therapy dogs.

For the past four years, Rose and fellow volunteers have been holding “Stress Relief Week” at the University at Buffalo’s Lockwood and Health Sciences Libraries.  Teams of therapy dogs are available to students during finals week and have proven to be wonderful stress relievers.  UB also has TAWNY come to other locations for various similar events such as “Medical Student Wellness Day.”

Rose is the Web Services & Library Promotion Coordinator at UB’s Health Sciences Library.
